Prof. Dr. Aydoğan Özcan “Deep Learning”
İTÜ BeeTalks Science and Technology Summit Dialogue Series continued with Prof. Aydoğan Özcan’s talk on ‘‘Mobile Microscopy and Sensing Using Computational Optics and Deep Learning''
The “BeeTalks Science and Technology Summit Dialogues” 2nd meeting at Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) 2018-2019 Academic year was carried out on October 2nd, 2018 at the Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center during. Prof. Dr Aydoğan Özcan, known globally for his work in Science, Engineering and Medicine, was the guest of our university. “Deep Learning” technology was discussed at the meeting, with the attendance of our Rector, Prof. Mehmet Karaca, the Principal Advisor for the President of the Turkish Republic, Prof. Davut Kavranoğlu, and many academicians and students. Prof. Mehmet Karaca referred to scholar Özcan with praise and as “our country’s honor” during his opening speech and thanked him for his lecture.
Nano Technologies inclusive of Artificial Intelligance in the field of Health
Prof. Özcan presented a general overview of the subject by exemplifying with studies carried out within the scope of “Deep Learning”. Özcan, who referred to “Deep Learning” and its various fields of use and the opportunities it presents, presented and exemplified information on modern day-future intelligent screening in the field of medicine and detection and diagnosis systems. Accordingly, he shared his experiences of how medical services could be offered more productively. Dr. Özcan indicated how he felt great honor of being at İTÜ and mentioned new technologies in the field of telemedicine and global health, and their fields of application. Some of these technologies were given as: “Lens Free Holographic Microscope and Mobile Phone Fluorescent Microscope”, “LUCAS (Lens Free Ultra-wide-field Cell Monitoring Array Platform based on Shadow Imaging)”, “LUCAS Holographic Microscope”, “LUCAS with High Resolution” and “Establishing E-Coli Bacteria with Mobile Phone”. Additionally, he also mentioned that the field of application includes the detection of maintenance, diagnosis and disease observation points, blood count, sperm count and waterborne parasites.
At the end of the lecture, Dr. Özcan answered questions and had one to one talks with students.
What is Deep Learning?
Its name comes from the deep neural networks general structure, which is formed by various artificial neuron layers materializing from a transaction which is planked on one another and is non-linear. It offers many pioneering opportunities in the fields of composing images beyond main stream applications such as the recognition of specific features in images and labelling in various images, reconstruction and perception.
Prof. Dr. Aydoğan Özcan
Aydoğan Özcan, born in 1978 started showing interest in science and mathematics at secondary school. After graduating from University in 2000 he went onto complete his Master’s degree at Stanford University in 2002, and Doctorate degree in 2005. He then continued his studies for a period of two years at Harvard University and during this time started showing interest in areas of electronics and medical issues. Aydoğan Özcan, who started his academic post at the University of California carried out studies in optic technologies and its use in diagnosing diseases.
