The European University project  prepared by  “European Engineering Learning Innovation and Science Alliance (EELISA)”, an alliance composed of eight leading partner universities in Europe of which ITU is the only partner from Turkey, is approved by the European Union (EU) Commission.

EELISA, of which ITU is a partner and aims to consolidate the progress of the EU values, aims to be an important guide for other higher education institutions in all sectors of European higher education and R&D by realizing the goal of establishing the European University. EELISA European University, which is among the 24 selected European University projects announced by the European Commission today, will align the strategies of the stakeholder universities with the goals of sustainable development.

To start implementing the plans simultaneously with other higher education institutions in the EU, EELISA alliance of which ITU is Turkey partner, will have a total of 7 million euro budget shares, 5 million euros from the Erasmus+ Programme for three years and 2 million euros from the Horizon 2020 Programme. With this fund from both programmes, ITU will play an important role in strengthening the interactions between the European Education Area and the European Research Area.

About EELISA

In the fall of 2017, European presidents and prime ministers opened up the idea of establishing 20 European Universities. The European Commission put the issue on the agenda from the first months of 2018 and made the first call at the end of 2018 and the second call in 2019. Among the projects participating in the first call, 17 projects were selected. This year, 24 projects were selected, including the EELISA European University project, of which ITU is a stakeholder.

The EELISA European University project consists of 9 sub-projects: ITU has taken the leadership of the sub-project "Bridge between Education, R&D and Innovation" and contributed to other sub-projects.

Higher education institutions that are members of the "European Engineering Learning Innovation and Science Alliance (EELISA)" represent more than 180 thousand students, 16 thousand academic staff, 11 thousand administrative staff and 50 thousand graduates each year.
